Charity, Work and Loyalty
We are part of the National Catholic Women’s League CIO which was founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher. Our Section here at St. Robert’s Morpeth was formed and founded in 1962.
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month in St Robert’s Church Hall at 10:30am. Members take part in local events and that of the National CWL. We are happy to take an active role in parish life and are involved in Lay Reading, Eucharistic Ministry, sick visiting, church cleaning, breakfast for the First Holy Communion children, plus refreshment for many and varied Parish events by invitation of Father Peter Stott, our Parish Priest.
Here in Morpeth, we are very much part of the International and Local aspect of the Catholic Women’s League. At present we are supporting the National Project PACT by fundraising and sewing ‘A Cross in my Pocket, having already made 70+
Special ProjecTS

The League’s special project is providing support for prisoners on release by working closely with The Prison Advice Care Trust.
This is the National President’s, Mrs Siobhan Garibaldi, National Project. This is the current National Project where members are busy making ‘A Cross in my Pocket’ and providing backpacks containing essential items for prisoners who have nothing on their release. Money will also be raised to support Pact.

Origins
The C.W.L. was founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher. She was the daughter of an Anglican Clergyman but was received into the Catholic Church in 1897. In a period of struggle for better and equal opportunities for women she looked for members who would support the League’s work at local, diocesan, national and international levels.
Today
We are an organisation of women who seek to promote Christian values within our families and the community at large. We work alongside many different charities helping where we can, following the example of our Patron St Margaret Clitherow. Some of us work within our Parish Churches teaching the faith to young and old, others work with the homeless, the immigrant communities, visiting hospitals and prisons, providing food and clothing to the needy and companionship to the elderly.
The League works nationally, too, having a highly respected voice on the NBCW (National Board of Catholic Women), the Consultative Body to the Bishops Conference of England and Wales. Our endeavour is to make our voice heard internationally also and this has been achieved by the League’s Founding Membership of the World Union of Catholic Women Organisations. In this way we are affiliated to over 100 women’s organisations in five continents. The aim for us all is to promote the advancement of women globally and to protect the interests of women and children, especially in the Developing World.
